Having first consider becoming a priest, and then giving up a professional sports career because of knee injury, Tom Cruise decided at 18 to move towards drama. After a few plays, he made his first appearance in film in Endless Love (Franco Zeffirelli, 1981), and pierces through the role-star Risky business (Paul Brickman, 1983). The success of Top Gun (Tony Scott, 1985) makes a real star, allowing him to try more ambitious roles in The Color of Money (Martin Scorsese, 1986) and Rain Man (Barry Levinson, 1988).
